Incivility in New Media

The topic I was planning on doing for my essay was incivility in new media. I know it is a broad topic and I had different ideas on how to narrow it down. I was thinking about talking about popular social media sites such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I was really focusing on Twitter because more people tend to use that site more than Facebook and it seems more popular. I was looking at some research for my paper and I came across one article that was about Twitter curbing incivility. The CEO of Twitter was talking about how he plans on kicking people off his site who spam other users and are threatening towards them. He also says how it is going to be difficult to do so because he knows that people do have the right to free speech and that he could lose a vast majority of users on the site because of it. I think this article will be very useful to my essay because I want to focus on what is being done by these social media sites to help stop incivility. I also want to focus on not only how much effect it has on the people using the site but also on the company themselves. I think as new media has gotten more popular and the people using the social media sites has grown incivility has only gotten much worse. It has gotten so much easier for people to just hide behind a computer screen and feel so much power to do what they want. They will say whatever comes to their mind and not think about the consequences it might have. I always thought about how it is affecting the people using these sites but not the other way around on how it is affecting the companies. I think my research question will be how much is incivility affecting these companies?

  1. I really like your topic and it gives me some good ideas for mine as well since we are talking about the same thing just in a different light. I like how you brought up twitter and the fact that the CEO has plans to kick people off who are uncivil because there gives a solution to what some sites could do to help incivility decrease. People don’t think about the consequences on saying something mean because sometimes there are no consequences. Are there? What do you think? I think often more than not there are no consequence of this action and that is why more and more people continue to do it. You have a good start.

  2. I find it interesting that the CEO said he would kick some of his viewers off for spamming others and threatening them. I think that would be a great idea to narrow you focus. But then again it might be hard to find more sources about this. But it offers a lot of controversy. I think what he wants to do is a good thing but then again he doesn’t want to lose all of his users.

  3. I think you have a good topic. Narrowing your focus on social media sounds like a great idea. You could always break your paper down into sections for each of the different sites. The article you mention fits your topic well and it is interesting. Are any other companies doing anything similar? You might be able to analyze what is being done about it. I have never considered what peoples behavior does for the companies either.
